DESCRIPTION

The Historic Charter of Barcelona is an interactive website that explains the urban evolution of Barcelona through the most important historical maps and documents of the city. The project was coordinated by a scientific committee that issued guidelines for selecting sources, restoring maps and verifying the historical consistency of the base information.

We redrew the maps from previously digitized historical planimetry, archaeological documentation of the city, historical surveys and the first digital maps made in the last century. The aim was to use a unique graphic style to make the documents as a whole easier to read and to include original sources when the resolution was good enough.

The platform was designed to be a living document that can be used in teaching activities at the History Museum and incorporate any research updates. To do this, users of the platform can explore different periods, zoom in and out, add comments, add and remove layers to the current map and consult the corresponding bibliography.

Hostench Architects, together with a group of historians, archaeologists, cartographers and programmers, have worked from its conception and origin to the present day, expanding and renewing the content annually.

Prize Associació Joves Arquitectes de Catalunya AJAC  of 2017 for the best digital research.

Prize Bienal Española de Arquitectura y Urbanismo BEAU XIV of 2018 for the best digital publication.
